NEWNHAM -
Our annual visit to Newnham this year was undertaken on a
bright sunny winters' day though it was deceptively cold in the NE
wind. As usual we met in The George for coffee just after 9.30
in readiness for the service across the road scheduled for 10.30
We were a convivial crowd of Mick & Debbie Valentine, Malc &
Lyn Adams, Maureen Jackson, Roy Chittleborough, Terry Deeley,
Alan Rowe, Roy Savery, Mark Ballamy, Brian Saxton, Marian &
Derek, Bill Wright Val & Tony Peachey and Dick Bradley 0f the
San Fairy Ann CC. As you can see our numbers are unfortunately
dwindling over the years, nevertheless we are always made very
welcome by the vicar and the congregation without fail.
The local community went to great lengths to commemorate
th
the 100 anniversary of the end of WW1 by creating mini scenes
from the 'horrors' of battle, sustained
by the soldiers. On one table there was
a mock up of trench life complete with
mud, water, dead trees and leaves with
images of soldiers on make shift
walkways through the mud. Another
displayed a warship. Two other tributes
had been created to remember
Pashendale and the Menim Gate. Whilst
outside, underneath our club plaque, a
bicycle stood with a huge basket of
flowers including poppies and
chrysanthemums. The local community
had really put a great deal of thought
and effort in for the occasion.
