Peter Shepherd sadly died on the 2nd October at the age of 81 after a long
period of ill-health with blood cancer.
Peter joined the club on the 27th
November 1953, having been proposed by
Johnny Moss and seconded by Tony
Peachey. At that time he was living in
London at 38 Harpenden Road, West
Norwood. Two other members also joined
on that day, Bertie Collins and myself. All

we were accepted as full club members a
few weeks later having attended the
correct number of club runs and, more

Peter competed in the usual round of
track, time-trial and road races, which

and joined the local branch of the British Legion; this was to be a significant
move for Peter as it would map out the rest of his life. It was at the British
Legion that he met Carol, who was to be his future wife. They married in 1989.
He started his National Service at the age of 21, allowing him to complete
his apprenticeship as an electrician working with his father (he spent some
time working in Bourne & Hollingsworth which, in those days was a large
London department store).
After his move from London to Bognor Regis, the De Laune lost track of Peter
until he rejoined the club on the 7th May 2002. Living some distance from
London, Peter was unable to participate in the majority of club affairs;
however, he and Carol attended numerous Remembrance Day services at
