The De Laune had just 2 riders, myself and Peter Gunnell. Peter
was placed 53 rd out of 98 finishers whilst I romped home in 12 th .
The individual splits below give you an idea of the effort required
for these rides. Obviously Ian Cammish had all the latest
equipment, both Peter and I certainly could not have boasted
such high ranking machines and very far removed from the from
those available today. We had conventional spoked wheels, no
tri bars though some of us were using clipless pedals. A picture
taken of me on the day verified the above and I clearly remember
my clipless pedals at the time were manufactured by Cinelli,
nicknames a rat trap, as the only way you could get out of them
was to take your hands of the bars to release the foot.
Clearly the last 25 took it's toll on all of us, probably a rising
westerly wind.
My time was gave me our club record at the time but I did
manage to update the following year on the same course to
4.4.31 this record still stands today.
On meandering through the rest of the riders it was a trip down
memory lane Tony
