Cambridge Gran Fondo.
Mick and I rode the Cambridge Gran Fondo, an UCI qualifier. On
closed roads it's 80 miles altogether with 8000 riders and well
organized.
The atmosphere is great with people cheering outside pubs and
families having picnics and BBQs in their front gardens.
Mick was well up on the time for his age category until cramp got
the better of him with 12 miles to go.
I had no illusions of qualifying so could enjoy the event including
the well organized feed stops. After the halfway feed stop I joined
a group of 2 girls and 3 guys. After about a couple of miles the 2
girls went to the front and I joined them. We dropped the guys and
rode together like 'a proper team ' all taking a turn at the front.
We were shifting but after about 25 miles I said to them to go on
without me as I needed to ease up a bit. The 2 girls said so do
we!L
We had a short blow and were raring to go again. The finish was
great the 3 of us across the line together all happy with the ride.
I thought the other 2 girls knew each other but they only met on
the day as well. The good thing is the numbers have your name on
so we could encourage each other using our names and we just
jelled like we had been riding together for years. Thats the great
thing about cycling these things just happen sometimes.
