Slightly different to Graeme Obree's Hour Record attempt at "the Hill" back
in the day, but nice to see a record set there, and nice link to the early days
of cycling. Maybe he'll have a crack at a hill-climb on one too... - I read
somewhere that the original Catfotd hill-climb started out on "Ordinaries"
though I find it hard to believe the laws of physics let them use tge same route
as today!

Catford CC hill climb. Photography Bernard Thompson. The first Catford
CC hill climb was held at Westerham Hill on August 20th 1887. In those days,
it was considered an achievement to get to the top without falling off. Riders
rode a mixture of ‘safety bicycles’ and penny farthings – all on solid tyres.
Of 24 starters, only 12 made it to the top.

1700 25MAY18: Just finished watching Chris Froome's remarkable win on
Stage 19 of the Giro d'Italia! Unsurprisingly the Eurosport commentary
"youngsters" and the cycle team interviewees were stuck to find words to
describe his performance, in comparison with racing history. I have one word
- "Coppiesque" - to cover it all, the attack, the breakaway and his very
convincing lone finish. "Un uomo solo e in comando" as the Italians used to
say about such rides many years ago, probably even on the same roads.
