Roy told me that we had priority on roundabouts on a tandem and I believed
him!
1961: No open wins just a few second and third
places so I realised I was going down hill fast. In
1968 Johnny Geoghegan asked me to ride a tandem
50 with him to go for the club record. I borrowed a
tandem from my dear friend Roy Manser. On our
trial run we were rubbish. We were not in sync. We
entered the Westerley 50 on the Bath Road. The start was in Theale, going
through Newbury and turning at Foxfield. On the way out the traffic was
building up and going very slow. John said ‘we are going on the out side of the
road’. This was very hairy with traffic coming the other way. We realized why
we had bad traffic because the Newbury Carnival was on the same road. On
the return we got mixed up with the carnival floats.
I can remember a float with Stone Age men on it who walloped us with papier
mache clubs. On the way back we pulled out our fingers and finished second
in one hour and 48 minutes., another Club record.
I hope to have more for you in the next months’ DLN.
Hi, just found the site and wondered if any one remembered from
around 1961/62.I was in the Scots Guards and posted to London
so joined the De Laune CC. I rode with Tony Peachey, Brian Dacey,
Dennis Tarr, Alan Rowe (had a crash with him at Herne Hill track)
and finished season 2nd fastest '25' of 57.48 to Kav!
