did it.: more miles to get in. just to keep Charlie happy. To cut the long story
short, I was knackered and did not win a thing for the rest of year.
One of the best riders we ever had in the club was Alan Jackson, winner of
many road races including a bronze and silver in the Australian Olympics. .
I recall him taking me aside to say ‘Cart horses are very strong, but have
never won the Derby’ or in other words get fast miles in. This I did by hanging
on the back of lorries on the Kingston Bypass ! That year 1956, I got down
to one hour and 10 seconds for 25 miles. The shorter faster mile also helped
me to get the club 100 record with a 4.31 27. The following year 1957, I was
down to 58.56 for 25 miles.
In 1958, I started off with a win in the Castelnau Medium Gear event on the
Portsmouth Road with a 1.3.09. I also took the club 50 record with 2 hours
and 21 seconds.
In 1959, I took second
place in the Castelnau
Medium Gear event. The
winner was our own Alan
Rowe This was a good
year for me with a second
in the Viking Medium gear
event, winning the
Hadrian 25; North Bucks
25; the Redmond 30; the
Kingston 25, and the
Harold Hill 25. I Took
second place to Alf
Engers who took comp record with 55.11 in the Leyton 25. I came second to
Engers with 56.56, a Club record.
1960 was another good year, with me winning the Viking Med gear 25; the
ECCA 25; the Brighton Mitre 25 and the Old Ports Tandem 30 with Roy
Chittleborough, in one hour and 3 minutes and 29 seconds. – a club Record.
